Liu Kuo-chang is the director-general of the Taiwan Artist-in-Residence programme and assistant professor at Shu-te University. He founded the Open Union Cultural and Creative Co. Ltd. in Tainan, Taiwan, in 2001. Liu is dedicated to integrating education, curatorship and the creative industries. Leading one of the very few crossover teams from Taiwan, he represented his country at the Venice Architecture Biennale, where his work was chosen as one of the 40 international entries for the list of next generation architecture. His team has been invited to major exhibitions, such as the Berlin DMY International Design Festival, the Hong Kong & Shenzhen Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture and the Aichi Triennale in Japan, as the voice of Taiwan. He is also personally involved in the reconstruction of local public spaces in combination with the creative industries.
Liu has been the chief site planner for the Taiwan Lantern Festival a number of times since 2005 and won the National Industrial Innovation Award 2012 for his design of the festival site in Lugang, Zhanghua. “Anping Tree House”, one of his representative works, picked up the National Design Excellence Award, while his “Lugang Bench-House” came away with the Annual Taiwan Public Art Award – Best Innovation from the Ministry of Culture. Liu was named Designer of the Year at the Shopping Design Award 2012.
